Item Description

The Rutile crystals from Graves Mountain are some of the finest examples of the species from any locality in the Western Hemisphere. This miniature specimen is a very good quality, classic example from this famous locality. The main crystal measures 2.3 cm with rather sharp, highly lustrous faces that show a metallic, silvery-reddish color sitting on reddish (iron stained) Pyrophyllite matrix. Rarely are these Rutile crystals seen on matrix, and this eye catching piece is a great example of this well known (and increasingly hard to find) material. The edge of the crystal is partially incomplete, so the piece is not 100% perfect, but the faces of the crystals are notably smooth and well-formed, with none of the undesirable surface crazing that is sometimes seen with these pieces. Priced at $900. The piece comes from the Doxsee collection.
