Ruby from Myanmar is one of the most storied gems in the world. As a matter of fact, the term "Ruby Spinel" is derived from the fact that the center stone in the Crown Jewels of England: Black Prince's Ruby is actually a Spinel! That stone was long thought to be a blood red Ruby when in fact it was discovered to be a gigantic Spinel that is estimated to weigh over 170 carats!! Here we have a wonderful, attractive pinkish red color Ruby with an "Oval Step" cut. These are absolutely some of the most popular Rubies in the world. The clarity of this stone is VVS, but it should be noted that this stone is most likely glass-filled, which is a technique used to improve the clarity of Rubies and Sapphires. This technique is an acceptable practice so long as the buyer is aware that they are buing a glass-filled stone. PLEASE NOTE: The embargo implemented by the United States government states that there will NOT be ANY of these Rubies imported to U.S. soil after September 30, 2008. The embargo appears to still be in effect, and one can only purchase gems that were imported prior to the embargo. From now on, these Burmese Rubies will be very difficult to obtain.
