Item Description
Ruby gems are the things of legend. You might see Ruby referred to as the "King of Gemstones", and for good reason, and they have been treasured for centuries. Even today, top Ruby stones are some of the valuable precious gems in the world. The finest Ruby are found in the Mogok area in Myanmar, where Ruby mining has taken place for hundreds of years. These best of these stones are among the most valuable gems ever found. This stone has an attractive reddish-pink color, and is certainly gem quality in clarity. It has a "Round" cut. It should be noted that this stone is NOT glass-filled, which is rare for the material, as the majority of Rubies on the market are treated or glass-filled, which is a technique used to improve the clarity of Rubies, and is an acceptable practice so long as the buyer is aware that they are buying a glass-filled stone. PLEASE NOTE: This stone was imported decades ago, prior to the embargo implemented by the United States government which denied the import of these Rubies to U.S. soil after September 30, 2008. Between the COVID pandemic, and political upheaval in Myanmar, mining hasn't taken place, and the market at Mogok is shut down, so it's a good idea to buy this gem now because they will likely be going up in price moving forward.
This stone is from the estate of former Phoenix area dealer Marvin Rockey. Rockey's Gems was a significant business in the early days of Arizona lapidary material, and he was a prominent dealer and buyer in the Arizona area of local lapidary and carving material from throughout the state, including Bisbee, the Ray Mine, Miami mines, and the Peridot finds on Indian lands in the 1950s-1970s. This stone was kept back from the retail stock for its quality and beauty, in a tray of special material, and was found in his estate (sold to us only recently). Today, these are not only rarely seen but of a highly desirable old quality, and sought after by collectors and gem / jewelry enthusiasts alike
