A good percentage of the Ruby gems on the market have been mined in Myanmar (Burma), but that supply is now completely shut off due to the pandemic and unrest in the nation. Recent reports inform us that there is no mining in Mogok, and the marketplace has been abandoned, and we don't know when mining will resume. There are other places in Southeast Asia that produce good Rubies, but the supply seems to be running short now the demand increased from a lack of stones from Myanmar on the market. Ruby from Thailand is not terribly common, and this stone is a great example of the old classic gems from years ago. This stone is a wonderful "Round Brilliant" cut gem with rich pinkish-red color and slight inclusions. Odds are this stone has been treated to improve its clarity, which is a perfectly safe and accepted practice in the gem world, so long as both the buyer and customer are aware that the stone has been treated. With demand at a high point, the prices being paid for top Rubies these days is as big as ever, as these gems still command a premium value on the market.
