Item Description
Rose Quartz is known from a good number of world localities, and large quantities of the material are mined every year in places like Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique and Namibia/South Africa, but the first known pieces of Rose Quartz were actually found in New England, specifically the Mt Mica Quarry in Maine. Later, some excellent gem quality examples of Rose Quartz were found at the famous Palermo No. 1 Mine in New Hampshire and have been known among New England collectors for decades. This stone is the FINEST example of faceted Rose Quartz that we've ever had from this locality to offer in the auctions. It's a beautiful, very soft pink color, "Modified Square Emerald" cut gem with excellent internal clarity. Most of the Rose Quartz stones you'll see from around the world are often hazy in terms of their clarity, and this is due to the fact that the color is created by micro inclusions of a fibrous pink colored unidentified mineral which is related to Dumortierite - see the photo at this link for a fantastic close up of what these inclusions look like (https://www.mindat.org/photo-743314.html). With that said, this stone has only a slight internal haziness, with a wonderful internal clarity that you don't often see in any Rose Quartz gemstones. I don't know how how many faceted Rose Quartz stones from this historic locality exist (mining first too place here in 1863), but I have to believe that stones this size are rare, and the quality is as good as it gets. The stone was cut by Howard Ewing, and while the accompanying box states the weight is 27.85 carats, we re-weighed it twice and the correct weight is 27.75 carats. With that said, the high retail price on this stone is $2,775.00, and you would be hard-pressed to find another like on the market today. A great stone for any fan of material from New England, gemstones of the United States / North America, or simply superb quality locality stones.
