Item Description

Roedderite is a rare silicate, a member of the Osumilite Group, which includes Sugilite. It is one of the multitude of very rare species, that are found in this well-known basalt quarry, where access is strictly limited (MINDAT). Tiny, hexagonal, gem, yellow and colorless crystals, to 2 mm, are scattered on the sculptural lightweight vuggy volcanic matrix. Tiny glassy Tridymite plates, a polymorph of silica and Pseudobrookite, a Fe-Ti oxide, are also indicated to be present. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 8293 and acquired as a gift in April, 1977. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). An excellent thumbnail combination from this famous locale.
