Item Description

Here we have a really interesting esoteric specimen from one of the most unique localities you could have for a mineral specimen. This piece comes with a label that it was from the "Atomic Power Plant" in Haddam Neck, Connecticut. This plant was the Connecticut Yankee Nuclear Power Plant, which was commissioned in 1968 and was decommissioned by 2004 (according to Wikipedia). The database listing on mindat.org does not mention Riebeckite occurring at this locality, so this could be something like Actinolite or another Pyroxene species. If anybody out there has some additional information about the identity or history of this specimen, please let us know. With that said, this small cabinet features a few crystalline areas of dark black / greenish-black colored Riebeckite measuring up to 2.3 cm across associated with dark pistachio green Epidote or Epidotite rock and massive Quartz matrix. A cool reference specimen from this interesting locality in New England.
