Item Description
Broken Hill is a one of the great world localities, producing some of the most iconic minerals ever found. Some of most beloved and fine quality specimens from Broken Hill are the classic and fine quality Rhodonites, which are as good as it gets for the species. Most Rhodonite crystals from around the world are typically opaque and pink, but the Broken Hill specimens are gemmy or at least translucent when backlit. This specimen is a prismatic crystal of rich red colored Rhodonite associated with shiny metallic grey Galena. The piece is complete on the prism faces, but the terminations are not completely intact. It's still a nice overall example of this iconic material. Keep in mind that the majority of these specimens were mined before 1950, and some date back as far as 1900.
Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#7183). Kay was a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
