Item Description

Rhodonite from Broken Hill set the standard for the species for a century, from the first finds in the late 1800s. This piece has crystals showing one of two glamorous styles of this juicy red species from the famous Broken Hill mining complex, with deep cherry red crystals to 2 cm in size, and a cluster 4.5 cm across, atop. It is an old classic, seldom seen in quality today. The specimen comes with several older, but unnamed labels attributing it to a specific mine within the complex here; and carries an old exhibition label showing it was donated by Richard and Helen Rice at the establishment of this museum. It is showy, rich, and representative of a rare matrix specimen of Australian rhodonite. Valued $1000-1200.
