Rhodochrosite with Quartz

The famous Uchuccchacua Mine in Peru has produced some iconic Rhodochrosite specimens over the years, typically showing scalenohedral / "dogtooth" habit crystals. This piece is from an older find and is not what one typically expects to see from this locality. The piece is loaded with dozens of fine, sharp, very lustrous, gemmy, intense reddish-pink colored, compressed rhombohedra which are associated with a patch of very sharp, well-formed, hexagonal, lustrous, gemmy Quartz crystals. The largest Rhodo crystal measures 7 mm across. The vast majority of the Rhodos are damage free, and the intensity of the color is really amplified by the reflective luster of the crystals. A very cool specimen that is certainly not the norm for the locality, and it would make a great addition to any worldwide Rhodochrosite suite or a collection of South American / Peruvian minerals.
