Item Description

A wonderful showy cabinet display specimen from the 1970s-1980s era of mining featuring a vug filled with excellent, sharp, lustrous, gemmy/translucent, scalenohedral crystals of rich pink Rhodochrosite measuring up to 7 mm, associated with a well-formed "spray" of dark brown Goethite on matrix. The Rhodo crystals are beautiful up close, but I'm equally drawn to the size and quality of the Goethite "spray", as it features finely crystallized acicular forms, which is not commonly seen from this locality. Overall the piece is in very good condition, and reflects a style that is not commonly seen on the market today. Santa Eulalia doesn't get enough credit for the quality of its Rhodos, being overshadowed by those from the Sweet Home Mine or South Africa, but they are quite good for the species, and certainly the finest examples ever found in Mexico. A choice piece of this classic and desirable material for any fan of worldwide Rhodochrosites or minerals of Mexico / Santa Eulalia.
Valued $2,000.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#128 MX), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection through our various platforms.
