South Africa is one of the top two localities for Rhodochrosites, ranking right up there with the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado. Among the great N'Chwaning Rhodochrosites, the 'Wheat Sheaf' habit is one of the rarest, and most sought-after, forms. The elongated bundles of crystals are quite unique, and as you see here, they are usually gemmy at the tips and translucent along the middle of the bundle. The color is is bright cherry-red, and the luster is good. This is a quality, aesthetic example of this coveted species. These came out i nthe early 1980s and judging from Jack's catalog number, and that he bought it from Obodda at the time, he was probably the first owner. It is a stunning, balanced, full thumbnail specimen with a huge impact value. Again, this is the kind of thumbnail specimen that shows you the difference between a small rock, and a great specimen that HAPPENS to be a regulation TN size. A very fine item, and one of the best pieces in this small and fun auction of items deaccessioned from the longlived collection of "Gentleman Jack!"
