Rich rose-pink coral-like clusters of rhodochrosite crystals cover this classic, old-time, rich and scuptural curved small cabinet from this famous locale. Oppu Mine rhodochrosite is the most important and classic Japanese locale for the species, long after its closing in 1979. This historic and ancient mine has been worked for silver, copper, lead, zinc and cadmium and finally for banded rhodochrosite since the late 1600s (MINDAT). Crystallized rhodos from here date from before WWII to over 100 years ago! Close examination of the white areas under a microscope revealed no damage, just a color variation. The underlying matrix is quartz with interesting greenish-brassy pryite. This excellent and classic old-timer displays well without aid. Valued at $2500.
