Item Description

Rhodochrosite is RARE from the famous and historic mines at Freiberg. Pretty pastel-pink, lustrous, curved flattened rhombs fill a rich sculptural vug in the strongly layered quartz-rich matrix. Tiny sharp sulfide crystals are richly peppered on the rhodos along with a cluster of glassy quartz points. This very fine old-timer has an impressive provenance. It comes with a Dr. A. Krantz in Bonn label dating from 1850-1888. Formerly in the Michigan College of Mines collection (1897 to 1927, 2 labels). Ex Dean Martalock Collection (died 1988), who gifted his collection to Michigan Tech. Then the Seaman Mineral Museum Collection. Ex W.S. Logan Collection # X100-6 and illustrated on Page 126 of his 2013 self-published book, Rhodochrosite - Crystals of Drama and Nuance (available by request). A VERY RARE old historical Freiberg rhodochrosite with a fine provenance! Valued at $500-700.
