Rhodochrosite (polished stalactite slice)

From the famous production that stunned the mineral world in around 1990, this is a gorgeous and perfectly symmetric radial slice through a rhodochrosite stalactite. Many came out, briefly, and caused so much profit and disruption to the local economy (with pilfering and other issues) that the military came in and blew up the biggest pocket found at the time! This is almost certainly from that famous find, given the consistency and saturation of color. They were the best! This is a superb example with excellent color and translucency when backlit, and a nicely done polish as well. Today, this quality is hard to find and should be valued at several thousand dollars or more.
