Rhodochrosite (Panczner Coll.)

This is a huge rhombohedral rhodochrosite for Mexico, nearly an inch across! It is a complete rhodochrosite crystal, and of rare habit, and is complete. It has tiny crystals of siderite attached to the complex, terraced front face of the rhodochrosite. (they might be able to be removed in a lab, but it is interesting and strange, so we never tried to remove them). It is a highly unusual rhodo for anywhere, for that matter. This is from the important suite of thumbnails we acquired recently in the Panczner collection. Not only did Bill and his wife Sharon specialize in thumbnails, but he wrote the book on Mexico minerals and this is from their own personal collection. It probably dates to the 1960s-1970s. Not the prettiest rhodo in the world, and the coating might be off putting to some folks, but it is an amazing example for Mexico, and different than others.
