This is a large massive rhodochrosite specimen and Rhodochrosite from the Kalahari fields has come out in a crazy variety of shapes and even colors, since first hitting the market in the late 1960s. This particularly unusual specimen is thought to be from one of the very earliest finds and styles, from 1967-1970, at Hotazel, and before the more plentiful material from N'chwaning started coming to market. This rounded style is highly unusual, then and now. this is actually a solid matrix of manganese ore with a thick, heavy layer of rounded deep-red rhodochrosite built up atop (like a thick rind on a watermelon), on which lays a 2-3 mm coating of microcrystallized pink rhodochrosite. Some edges are contacted or naturally rounded with unusual scallop-shaped growth patterns, and some are broken where it grew against more material; so It is not perfect, with some edge damage you can see, but it also displays nicely anyways and draws the eye for the contrast of colors.
