Item Description
VERY RARE, VERY RICH small cabinet rhodochrosite on quartz plate from this well-known extinct North Carolina open pit pegmatite mine. Two generations of translucent variably-sized banded bubbly rhodochrosite botryoids to crudely euhedral rhombohedrons strikingly cover the quartz matrix. The broken botryoid on the left edge and along the periphery reveals the underlying first generation pink rhodochrosite. The second generation burnt-orange rhodo with a pinkish tint covers the entire plate. The mine is famous for a variety of rare phosphates and silicates. Formerly in the collection of Jack Eaker, the mine assayer, while the quarry was in operation. Rare, perhaps UNIQUE in richness and style rhodochrosite from the Foote MIne. Valued at $750-1000.
