Rhodochrosite on Quartz (ex Brian Kosnar Collection)

The famous Sunnyside Mine in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado has produced some very well known Rhodochrosite specimens, which are only second behind the Rhodos from the Sweet Home Mine. This wonderful cabinet piece hosts small attractive, rose pink colored rhombic crystals of Rhodochrosite which are sitting on a layer of crystallized milky Quartz plus tan colored aggregates of Kutnohorite on sulfide-rich matrix. The largest composite group of Rhodochrosite crystals measures about 2.7 cm across. I love how beautifully isolated the crystals are, giving the piece balance and character. Very little damage, save the periphery where it was removed from the pocket wall. An eye-catching specimen for any collector of Rhodochrosites or specimens from Colorado from this well known mine in southwestern Colorado. Please note, this piece is not from the "American Tunnel Mine", which is a generic term that people used for specimens that came out of the Sunnyside Mine.
