Rhodochrosite on Quartz

Item Description

Classic and desirable Colorado rhodochrosite from the American Tunnel of the famous Sunnyside Mine in the San Juan Mountains. Clusters of pretty pastel-pink, sharp, lustrous, translucent rhombohedrons are aesthetically scattered on the sculptural and undulating large matrix covered with contrasting, sparkly druzy quartz points. The rhombs reach 1.2 cm on the diagonal. The interior is in great shape and the bit of noted periphery wear certainly has minimal impact to the overall high quality and richness of this combination. The piece displays beautifully from two sides. The underlying ore matrix is sulfides, rhodochrosite and quartz. Material of this quality was mined in the 1950s to 1970s and is rarely on the market today. From the collection of well-known Jack Halpern of San Francisco, as featured in the Mineralogical Record, March 2005. We recently obtained the remainder of his collection.
