Rhodochrosite on Pyrite (RARE locality specimen) (ex Gary Weaver Collection)

Item Description

The combination of Rhodochrosite with Pyrite is not necessarily rare in the mineral world, but this association is incredibly hard to find from the famous Quiruvilca Mine in Peru. I've only seen a handful of them, and I honestly mistook this piece as coming from the Eagle Mine in Colorado when I first picked it up. The specimen features many sharp, well-formed, beautiful pink colored "rosettes" of Rhodochrosite comprising flatted rhombohedra with individual crystals measuring up to 3 mm sitting atop bright, splendent, golden metallic pyritohedral Pyrite crystal matrix. The largest Pyrite measures 1.1 cm across. The top / display side of the specimen is in good shape, but the periphery is contacted where it was removed from the pocket wall. If you collect worldwide Rhodochrosites, Peruvian minerals or association specimens, don't pass this one up as it is a very attractive and worthwhile example that you'll rarely seen from this historic locality.
