Rhodochrosite on Pyrite (ex Dr. William Logan Collection)

There are plenty of localities for Rhodochrosite in Peru, but the famous Quiruvilca Mine is not the first place that one thinks of when it comes to this beloved manganese carbonate. The combination of Rhodochrosite with Pyrite is not necessarily rare in the mineral world, but this association is incredibly hard to find from the Quiruvilca Min. The specimen features small, beautiful pastel pink colored "rosettes" of Rhodochrosite comprised of flattened rhombohedra sitting atop bright, splendent, golden metallic pyritohedral pyrite crystal matrix. The largest pyrite measures 1.3 cm across. The top/display side of the specimen is in good shape, but the periphery is contacted where it was removed from the pocket wall. You would be hard-pressed to find another one of these pieces, so if you're a fan of worldwide Rhodochrosites, don't pass this one up, as it's the only one we have to offer from this locality.
