Rhodochrosite on Manganite (fluorescent!)

Predating the famous finds at N'chwaning, the Rhodochrosites from the old Black Rock Mine were found in a variety of habits and combinations. This attractive, small miniature features opaque, crystalline Rhodochrosite that grades from a lovely, soft pink to a deep rose-pink. This partial, 2 cm ball of the second generation is highly lustrous, with two different types of terminations creating an interesting and varied texture along the surface. Both generations of Rhodochrosite are fluorescent, which is a real surprise (I do not recall ever thinking to LOOK for such a result in South African rhodo before). The contrasts in color and form between the Rhodochrosite and the Manganite are stark, appealing, and aesthetic, which increases the interest of this miniature on every level. This spherical habit of the second generation is very different than the later finds at Black Rock, yet another reason for being so sought-after. Good specimens are hard to come by, which actually holds true for all the wonderful South African Rhodos. An old specimen from the late 1960s.
