Item Description

I think one could make the case that the finest crystallized Rhodochrosites from any South American locality are the pieces from the famous Uchucchacua Mine in Peru. Typically we are used to seeing the classic scalenohedral form combined with fiery colors, but THIS piece is a far cry from your typical Uchucchacua Rhodo (or any other mine for that matter). The main crystal on this specimen measures 4.3 cm long, which is large not only for this mine, but for Rhodochrosite in general. Along with the noteworthy size, the habit of the crystal is what is most striking. The crystals is what I would call "pseudo-monoclinic", and unusually doubly-terminated, which is not commonly seen in prismatic Rhodochrosite crystals. I can't determine if this is highly elongated rhomb (along one axis) or an unusually compressed scalenohedron. It is nonetheless rare and peculiar for the species. The underlying white Quartz crystals make for the perfect matrix for the Rhodos. An additional broken Rhodo can be see on the edge of the piece, but it reveals that the crystals are a strong pinkish-red color inside, so don't let the lighter colored exterior fool you. It should be noted that both terminations of the main crystal are actually sharp and lustrous, while prism is a bit more matte luster and has an almost etched appearance. A really special and one-of-a-kind Rhodo that would make a great addition to any collection. Valued in the inventory at $1,500. From the worldwide Rhodochrosite collection of Dr. William S. Logan (Specimen #X27-6).
