Item Description

A classic old-time Rhodochrosite from the Hotazel Mine in the famous Kalahari Manganese Field. This particular habit / style was only found for a brief time in the mid 1970s and truly stands out as some of the most distinctive and eye-catching material from any South African locality. The piece hosts several semi-spherical Rhodos with a notably silky exterior luster, and a fiery red internal color when backlit. The combination of the smooth flowing forms along with that gorgeous hue make this not only attractive but quite desirable for the species and the locality. Underneath the red Rhodochrosite is an earlier generation of soft pink banded material which is sitting on the black Manganite matrix. Looking closely, you can see a few small areas of banding, somewhat similar to pieces from Argentina. Minor damage here and there, but overall I think it's in great shape and it's very attractive in person. Hotazel is known for producing many habits (scalenohedra, rhombs, "balls", "wheat sheaf", etc.) and colors (blood red, brownish, baby pink, etc.), but pieces with this particular habit and color are extremely rare, and if you collect Rhodochrosites or miniatures, don't miss out on this lovely specimen from nearly 50 years ago. From the worldwide Rhodochrosite collection of Dr. William S. Logan (Specimen #X24-5). Valued at $1,200 retail.
