Item Description

The Oppu Mine remains, long after its closure, the classic and most well-known source of rhodochrosite from Japan. Rhodos from here date from before WWII to over 100 years ago! This showy plate of translucent, botryoidal, pretty rose-red rhodochrosite covers sulfide matrix. A bit of periphery wear is certainly a modest detraction to this classic, old-timer. Excellent material from this historic locality from the Ito and Howard Belsky Collections.
