Item Description
The famous Wolf Mine in Siegerland, Germany is noted for having produced the finest crystallized rhodochrosite specimens in Europe and for many years were considered the finest in world. The mine operated continuously from 1870 to 1925 and then sporadically until 1962. Good specimens are today quite difficult to find and are very highly desirable. This very fine and showy old-timer features a striking ledge filled with juicy, translucent, rose-red rhodo crystals of three varieties! You see scalenohedrons, needled puffballs and most commonly, clusters of barrel or cone-shaped crystals with a myriad of spiky, scalenohedral terminations. Crystals reach about 6 mm. The matrix is bedded limonite and quartz. Classic, old-time material from this noted locale. I have seen such pieces priced at the Munich Show from 400-900 Euros. Valued at $750
