Rhodochrosite

Rhodochrosite as a species is quite well-known from the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado, or the N'Chwaning Mines in South Africa, but there are very extensive Rhodochrosite deposits in Argentina. Now it should be noted that the Argentine material is not often gemmy enough for faceting stones, but it does have great color and patterns when polished. This particular stone is a good sized, beautiful reddish-pink, pale pink and white "Oval Cabochon" cut gem with good translucency, and beautiful layered banding showing how it grew in stalactitic formations.
