Item Description

Cordierite from this locality sets the standard for the species. Unlike the ugly material from most places, it is actually pretty here - sometimes. The sharp crystals and crystal fragments have a waxy brown/olive-green look to the surface on the best specimens, such as this one. The large, sharply terminated orthorhombic crystal is 6.7 cm long. The really cute, isolated, sharp crystal is 1.2 cm. This crystal even has a bit of gemmy translucence! This was collected by Robert Whitmore in the 1970s and is a showy and excellent specimen set in biotite schist and quartz-rich matrix. Ex Robert Whitmore Collection. Highly rare and sought after, these seemingly ugly crystals are very fine for the species, even with the bruising to the large crystal. SELDOM SEEN FOR SALE. valued $500
