Item Description

Mineral specimens are rare from this obscure mine in Coahuila State, Mexico and when we first saw this stunnign calcite we assumed it had to be an old specimen from Dalnegorsk but...it is much more rare than that! The Hercules Mine is known to have produced very fine calcites of this style and this is an exceptional large single crystal. This is a spectacular well-formed gem-like scalenohedron with a stunning water-clear termination. Complete all-around and the superlative termination and front are pristine. Some small contacting lower on the back is out-of-sight. Most of the few specimens on the market have been clusters. Interestingly, NO fluorescence on this gemmy calcite. Ex Chet Lemanski Collection, and acquired from respected Mexico specialist and author, Dr. Peter Megaw, in Tucson in 2005. The clarity and brilliance of this crystal compares favorably with classic calcites from Cumbria, England and Dalnegorsk, Russia! High praise, indeed. It is a spectacular piece, overall - the more so, for the locality. We had no idea what to value this at, but a coimparable Dalnegorsk specimen (more common) usually goes for $1000 and more in this size and quality range.
