Item Description

This amethyst, from a prominent collection, is part of a VERY RARE and impressive large combination from the Tafelkop of the famous Goboboseb Mountains of Namibia. A striking, pristine, 8.2 cm, doubly terminated amethyst crystal is aesthetically set on the sculptural well-prepared basalt matrix covered with RARE oxide-tinted, saddle-shaped Dolomite rhombohedrons. Some of the dolomite crystals have a preferential secondary overgrowth of sparkly, sugary, drusy quartz, adding allure. The fine glassy and lustrous amethyst is gemmy to translucent with nifty stepped-growth prism faces and the variable hues of rich grape-purple at the terminations and blush-purple in the mid-section add much contrast and character to this rarity. MINDAT does NOT list dolomite for the locale. The specimen is illustrated in the MINDAT Photo Gallery for the Tafelkop. Ex Rock Currier Collection No. 8380 and acquired in 2012 directly from the quarry owner. Superb, rare, perhaps UNIQUE amethyst on dolomite from the locale. Fairly valued at $4000-4500 for uniqueness and aesthetic quality. We simply see so few good, undamaged, no-repair amethysts on matrix from here, but a doubly terminated crystal just frontally displayed like this is...phenomenal. No repairs, no fancy cleaning, no damage - just amazing it survived.
