Item Description

A large, eye-catching fine quality example of polished Rainbow Obsidian from the La Revoltosa Mine in southwestern Mexico. Most Obsidian is solid black and often opaque, but this particular material is some of the best Obsidian you'll find on the market in terms of purity, and yet only a small percentage of these stones contains the highly desirable rainbow banding patterns, which are just gorgeous when polished. This piece is an impressive full cabinet sized example featuring dark iridescent colored bands of blue, green, purple, pink and gold which shimmer in reflected light. You need a good light source to best see the colors and the pattern, either a strong indoor bulb or sunlight. The piece shows the banding on both sides and looks beautiful from either face. For those who are unfamiliar, Obsidian is natural volcanic glass, formed at the end of volcanic activity in an area where the remaining silica quickly cools near the surface. The piece from the La Revoltosa Mine are highly prized in the lapidary industry for their superior consistent quality, and this piece would make a great addition to any collection of carvings or various lapidary items. Item weight is 274.1 grams.
