Item Description
Quartz specimens from this old iron mine (which according to the entry on mindat.org was first mentioned in 1465 and abandoned in 1962) are virtually impossible to find on the market. This is honestly the first one I can remember seeing from the locality, and although the termination has a fairly notable contact, I can still see why Kurt kept it for his collection, because it certainly could have been the best one that he had seen from the Neue Haardt Mine. The piece features a pronounced, GEMMY, colorless Quartz ("Bergkristall") crystal surrounded by additional translucent white Quartz crystals, and associated with minor brassy metallic Chalcopyrite and some tiny rhombs of an unknown carbonate (Calcite, Dolomite, Ankerite?). A really cool locality piece that would make a great addition to any Quartz suite or a collection of German minerals.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#548 D), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection for the foreseeable future through our various platforms.
