Quartz var: Smoky (rare locality)

Item Description

A very hard to find specimen specifically from the Moose Pocket on Blue Mountain, in New Hampshire. This piece features several sharp, well-formed, prismatic hexagonal crystals of Smoky Quartz measuring up to 5.3 cm long, sitting atop beige Feldspar matrix (it appears there is both Albite and Microcline on the piece). The Smokies are rather dark, and even with good backlighting, very little gemminess comes through. A few minor imperfections prevent the piece from being pristine, but it's still quite showy and one of the VERY few we've ever had to offer from this specimen pocket.
From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974.
