Item Description

The classic Serifos Island locality in Greece is world-famous for producing some of the finest examples of a Quartz variety called "Prase", which loosely refers to crystals with a leek green color. The specimens from Serifos Island get their color from inclusions of Hedenbergite, but other "Prase" crystals from additional localities feature minerals like Actinolite or even Clinochlore. This piece is a showy and aesthetic example filled with narrow prismatic crystals of a rich green hue measuring up to 2.6 cm, elegantly sitting on matrix. The rich Hedenbergite inclusions create a strong color, visually striking and distinctive. Most of the Quartz crystals are in pretty good shape, though some of them are contacted, and it's rare to find completely pristine examples from this locality. If you look closely, you will see some tiny "rosettes" of metallic silvery-grey Hematite on the piece, which is a nice accent. From the collection of Vasco Trancoso, a medical doctor and prominent mineral collector from near Lisbon, Portugal (https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html). He assembled his mineral collection over the course of 60 years, and built a fine worldwide display collection that we recently purchased. This piece is pictured on mindat.org at https://www.mindat.org/photo-224343.html
