This is a stunning example of the famous, old, classic amethysts found in Veracruz in the 1980s, with the best purple color to date. Thousands have been found since, but I think most would agree that nothing rivals the best of the old finds when the site was fresh. The color at the tips is not just grape jelly purple, but a vivid, sparkling color that is hard to describe, with a brightness to it that you do not see in most amethyst. The gradation of purple to white in the same crystal is characteristic of the best of this material - to me, the best specimens always show the greatest contrast. Most modern production is a sparkling but pale lavender color; a pale shadow of the best. The color is all the more intense for the contrast. No damage, no repairs. Crystals to 3.5 cm long. In total, this is a stunning small cabinet specimen, quite above the norm. From the old quartz suite of the Gene Meieran collection (at its peak, he had hundreds of quartzes collected over the last 60 years), and one of the last few to go of his worldwide quartz collection.
