Item Description
When people think of minerals from Creede, species like Sphalerite, Chalcopyrite and Silver come to mind, but Creede is also well-known for being essentially the only mining district in the state where the sulfide minerals are often found in association with Amethyst. As a matter of fact, the famous Amethyst "sowbelly" ore slices from Creede are some of the most well-known examples of Amethyst from any orebody in the U.S. With that said, here we have a wonderful big cabinet specimen of Amethyst which was mined between November of 2003 and July of 2004 by Charles Downing, and features dozens of sharp, well-formed, translucent prismatic crystals measuring to about 6 mm, sitting on reddish-brown porphyritic rhyolite matrix. Nearly every Amethyst crystal is undamaged. You rarely see such big pieces of this material that are essentially pristine from Creede.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 210 CO.14; 7086. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
