Quartz var. Amethyst

This is a modern classic from this important quartz find starting around 2018, and even admittedly ongoing. However, most of the strong colored and well lustered specimens seem to have come out before 2021, compared to what is still being produced now. It is a sculptural cluster that excels in the size range for luster and quality of this fascinating new quartz material from Indonesia! It is made up of hundreds of "balls" of this attractive and sparkling quartz. Individual spheres measure up to 6 mm across, which is larger than the majority we've seen on other specimens. I like the way that they increase in size from the bottom of the specimen to the top corner. The color is a medium purple with a LOT of sparkle, as if it were dipped in sugar. While many tons of this material were mined from a large volcanic host deposit, the best material was few and far between; and pieces of this quality in this size were scarcely seen. Many larger pieces of quality came out, but they can be too big for most of us, and I particularly liked this well-balanced small cabinet piece. Areas of moss green colored Celadonite can be seen here and there on the underside and edges for a pleasing overall two-tone color effect. Its not completely undamaged but is nearly pristine, and has such great aesthetics. An exceptional example of one of the biggest new mineral finds of the last few years. Analysis by Dr. George Rossman at Caltech concluded these should be labeled as amethyst, and not chalcedony or agate.
