Item Description

Mt. Ida is one of the premier Quartz localities, not only in Arkansas or the U.S., but the world. Some of the finest optic grade examples of the species have been found there, with absolute colorless purity and often in completely transparent and fairly large examples. It's not just the size/quality of these crystals that makes them interesting, as they can also form in unusual habits/morphologies, and this piece is a great example of said material. This near "floater" crystal has incredibly sharp, well-formed lustrous faces on the front/display side, while the back is re-crystallized ("re-healed") with virtual water-clear transparency in areas, but what makes it special is the fact that it has an odd habit with the crystal running askew at an almost 45-degree angle against the prism. You can see the termination positioned at the top of the specimen at the beginning of the video, and you can follow the broad "r" face on the underside of the piece, nearly all the way down to the bottom corner, where little points terminate to create essentially a "doubly-terminated" crystal. As mentioned, the piece is nearly a "floater", but I can see some small imperfections where it's not completely crystallized. The crystal likely was detached from the pocket wall at some point and the exposed areas that detached re-crystallized in this unique way to create a one-of-a-kind crystal. A really cool example of these well-known and high quality Quartz specimens from this world-famous locality.
Specimen weight is 121.4 grams.
