Item Description

The Jinlong Hill locality in China has produced some very distinctive combination specimens featuring attractive sharp prismatic Quartz crystals sitting among beautiful "roses" of bladed Hematite. This piece is a highly unusual and just plain odd-looking specimen featuring what can only be described as "distorted" Quartz crystals which have highly unusual interrupted growth, that seems to be intersected by thin layers of Hematite within the Quartz crystals themselves. They're not etched, but rather seem to have been interrupted by the Hematite, and then started regrowing, only to be interrupted again, and continued with their formation. There are a couple of Quartz crystals on the piece that don't look to have been as affected as others, but the end result is certainly one of the most interesting and alluring examples of crystallized Quartz you'll find. The matrix is covered with tightly intergrown "roses" of dark grey-black Hematite. The piece does have some peripheral damage, so it's not 100% pristine, but it's such a strange yet enticing specimen, that you can forgive the damage. If you're a fan of Quartz or unusual morphology, this is a must have piece for your collection, as the style is unlike anything you'll see from this locality, or virtually anywhere else. I searched a couple mineral databases online, and couldn't find a comparable specimen to this one from Jinlong. From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl, a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection over the next two to three years through our various platforms.
