Quartz on Quartz

Item Description

This is a composition of layers and layers of sparkling quartz: A large Quartz crystal is adorned with smaller, numerous, glassy, Herkimer-like Quartz crystals on this unusual piece piece from Switzerland. The primary Quartz crystal on this piece is 8.5 cm in maximum dimension and and a portion of it has been fractured and subsequently rehealed. This crystal is glassy, translucent and zoned as is evident from the sheared portion where a transparent to translucent core shows a 3 mm, dove-gray overgrowth followed by a 4 mm darker gray overgrowth at its rim. The backside shows this crystal to be doubly terminated with prominent, horizontal striations on the broad prism face. The front side shows off the numerous, 4 mm to 1.5 cm, glassy, parallel growth, doubly terminated Quartz crystals that appear to be in epitactic growth on the larger Quartz crystal. They are incredibly glassy, mostly transparent and totally colorless with minor skeletal growth features on some crystals. The piece has great architecture and composition!
