Item Description
A striking and appealing specimen of the seldom seen Japan-Law Quartz specimens from the Fengjiashan Mine. This aesthetic, three-dimensional display specimen features several fine quality, sharp, well-formed, textbook Japan-Law twins measuring up to 5.0 cm across sitting among single Quartz prisms with an odd cluster of lustrous white Quartz crystal near the upper portion of the specimen. The Quartz crystals show a bi-color appearance with a matte silvery hue that is overgrown by a thin layer of an unknown iron oxide. If you flip the piece over, you can see many tiny scalenohedral Calcite crystals which are colored red by presumably the same iron oxide creating the chocolate brown hue on the Quartz crystals. These specimens are virtually impossible to find on the market today, and this one is not only distinctive, but really fine quality with NO major damage that I can see with the naked eye. Valued at $1,500 in our inventory. Ex Dr. Stephen Smale Collection. Along with amassing one of the finest private mineral collections in the world, Steve is a renowned mathematician. His accomplishments include being awarded the Fields Medal in 1966 along with being the awarded the Wolf Prize in mathematics in 2007. You can read Steve's bio on the Mineralogical Record website ( https://mineralogicalrecord.com/labels.asp?colid=671&page=1 ) or on Wikipedia.
