Item Description

A fantastic, big hefty Quartz crystal from Placerville, California that dates back many decades as it originally belonged to Lazard Cahn, a prominent Colorado dealer who died in 1940, so the piece is well over 80 years old. It's certainly the largest single Quartz crystal we've ever had to offer from Placerville, which is not really known for its Quartz specimens, especially in this size and quality. The piece is a single, prismatic crystal with sharp, lustrous well-formed faces, and a very slightly smoky hue (virtually colorless) showing excellent internal gemminess, and when you look closely, you can see a defined "phantom" frozen inside. One end is well-terminated, though a small chip can be seen on the back, but it presents quite nicely as you can see from the video. The piece weighs 1,416 grams (just over 3 pounds), and would make a fantastic addition to any Quartz suite or a collection of California minerals. The piece was also in the collection of Charles Noll.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 210 CA.1; 9946 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
