Item Description
A rarely seen, yet beautiful and elegant toenail sized display specimen featuring a wonderful, razor-sharp, highly lustrous, GEM QUALITY, colorless "Japan-Law" twinned crystal of Quartz measuring 1.0 cm across, sitting atop a matrix of dark orange colored dodecahedral Garnet (presumably Grossular or Andradite) on matrix from an undisclosed locality in the San Pedro Mountains of New Mexico, according to the accompanying label from New Mexico Mineralogical Research and Exploration. I can see some TINY imperfections on the twin under magnification, but you can't see them with the naked eye. My favorite aspect of the twin is that it's not just the typical "butterfly" with two wings, but it's actually starting to show the reentrant faces on the lower portion, as it tried to finish growing on the bottom, which is rarely seen in this particular habit of twinning in Quartz. Rare, eye-catching and highly desirable for any fan of Quartz, twinned crystals or minerals of New Mexico. I've never seen a piece quite like this, and I value it in the $750-$1K range for its quality and uniqueness.
From the collection of David E Ziga, a geologist who graduated Miami (of Ohio) University in 2017, with a mineralogy background. Specimen #145.
