Item Description
A good-sized example of the well-known "Japan"-twinned Quartz crystals from the Holland Mine in Washington Camp, Arizona. The area around Patagonia is locally famous for producing some beautiful examples of this well-known twinning habit of Quartz, often in larger than average sizes. This piece shows the classic twinning angle at exactly 84°33' for the habit, with the larger left wing being a complete crystal, and the termination on the right side is not completely terminated, but not broken, it's just an interrupted/incomplete growth. A few un-twinned single prisms of Quartz make for a great accent, so it's not just a solitary twin, but rather has a bit more to offer in terms of aesthetic appeal. The piece is repaired, almost directly down the center of the twin, so please keep this in mind when bidding. Small areas of gemminess can be seen, and the piece doesn't have the frosted chalky white exterior that is often seen in the material. A larger than typically seen example of this regionally celebrated material.
From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
