Quartz (interesting color with ''Chlorite'' ''phantom'') (ex Al Kidwell Collection)

Here we have a classic Swiss Quartz specimen from the Schin Gorge (Schinschlucht) in the lowest part of the Abulatal. This piece hosts a predominant, sharp, lustrous, gemmy, prismatic, hexagonal crystal measuring 6.9 cm with a unique strong yellow hue (due to minor iron oxide) along with a few smaller Quartz crystals that show the same yellow color on a small amount of matrix. If you rotate the piece around, you'll see the back of the main Quartz crystal features a mossy green colored "phantom" created by inclusions of "Chlorite". The piece is not completely damage free, as one edge is contacted where it detached from the pocket wall, but it's still a very showy, colorful and eye-catching piece and the two-tone effect from the "Chlorite" and the yellow iron oxide gives it character. Valued at $1,000. From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974.
