Item Description

This is a very fine, full cabinet sized display specimen from the historic San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. This piece features attractive, well-formed "casts" of lustrous, sparkling drusy Quartz crystals after tabular crystals of Anhydrite on matrix. It certainly has a beautiful appearance, and virtually no damage on the front/display side, only peripheral roughness where it was removed from the pocket wall. It should be noted that for many years, these specimens were labeled as Quartz after Baryte, but given the fact that Barite is chemically inert and nearly impossible to dissolve, it is a certainty that these "casts" are actually Quartz replacing Anhydrite. This information has been confirmed by Dr. Virgil Lueth, formerly of New Mexico Tech. The piece was collected by Robert Stoufer, and comes from the collection of Brian Kosnar.
