Item Description

A fantastic big cabinet sized display specimen from the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Dozens of "stubby" white Quartz crystal have formed a "shell" or "cast" which formed over preexisting rhombic crystals of Calcite which later dissolved away, leaving impressions of their original form on the underside of the specimen. It should be noted that piece was originally labeled as being an "epimorph", but recently it has been suggested that these specimens should be called "perimorphs". Whatever you call them, this particular specimen is a fantastic overall example of these classic "casts". What really makes this piece stand out for me is that the Quartz layer is really THICK compared to most I've seen from the area. It's also quite showy and three-dimensional, so it displays wonderfully as you can see from the photos. A must-have for any fan of "casts", Quartz specimens or minerals of Colorado. Valued at $850. From the collection of Gary Weaver of Prescott, Arizona (1944-2019). Gary was an electrical engineer who worked for many years for Hughes Aircraft in California.
