Item Description

There are several localities in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado that produce some iconic Quartz replacements or "casts" after species like Fluorite and Calcite. With that said, this specimen is a fantastic example featuring dozens of sharp, lustrous, prismatic hexagonal white / milky Quartz crystals measuring up to 2.1 cm long sitting atop hollow sculptural "casts" (sometimes called epimorphs or perimorphs) after preexisting Calcite and Fluorite. You can see cubic forms where the Fluorite once grew, along with narrow scalenohedral shapes of the now dissolved Calcite crystals. At one point, only the Fluorite and Calcite crystals were present, but they were dissolved away by a solution that entered the pocket at a later date, leaving behind the Quartz crystals. A wonderful specimen from a district that produced some of the most classic "casts" from all of Colorado. Priced at $950 in the inventory. From the collection of Gary Weaver (1944-2019), an electrical engineer who worked for Hughes Aircraft in California. After retiring to Prescott, Arizona in the early 2000s, Gary rekindled his childhood love of minerals, amassing a collection of roughly 2000 specimens, focusing on localities in which he and his wife had lived or visited (Mexico, Peru and the western / southwestern United States).
