Item Description

An impressive and rich large combination plate from the world's oldest continually producing gold mine, started in 1725 (MINDAT). The matrix plate of glassy, highly lustrous and translucent, light gray dolomite rhombs is dramatically festooned with brassy, tabular crystals of pyrrhotite and cubanite and accented with a couple of quartz crystals. The larger hexagonal crystals are pyrrhotites (pretty iridescence) and many of the smaller crystals are cubanites. Such large and very rich combinations are not that common. From an East Coast collection. The accompanying Baskin & Sons label dates to the 1960s and 70s, when prolific and famous finds were made at this noted locale. This excellent combination piece displays well from either side.
